The third content update for patch v9.30 introduces the Air Strike item into Battle Royale. We’ll take a detailed look at how the new weapon works, its stats, and how you can make the most of it.

Epic Games is never shy to try out new things with Fortnite and Content Update #3 for patch v9.30 certainly shows that in full force. The Air Strike item brings in heavy aerial ordnance to help you out in fights.

Fortnite’s explosive have had a mixed record with many players wanting to see less of them. We’d argue the Air Strike isn’t quite as annoying as some of the other explosive additions like the Proximity Launcher and fills a role without becoming overpowered. To prove our point, let’s looks at its stats and gameplay.

Air Strike Item Stats & Characteristics

I need a tactical precision strike on my mark!

The new Air Strike item is a powerful new area-of-effect explosive which calls in a centralized strike on a location. The object is thrown like a grenade and then, after a short delay, missiles begin to rain down from the sky. According to the official patch notes, the missiles exactly 120 “units” above the target.

  • Each missile deals 75 damage to players
  • Each missile deals 200 damage to structures
  • 20 missiles per strike
  • Random missile placement within 9 meter radius
  • Splash damage radius of 3.5 meters

The Air Strike is very powerful, don’t get us wrong, but it’s a Legendary tier item and is very rare to obtain. In several Team Rumble testing matches, we only managed to get the item a single time and only saw it used by others twice. This seems in line with the current drop rates of other Legendary items or the Epic Storm Flip.

To us, the most enticing part of this new item is its ability to disrupt stagnant build fights. Build battles are awesome when both players/all players are looking to go for the kill, but some opponents simply want to prolong the fights. The Air Strike effectively forces the defensive player to move and build elsewhere for a few seconds.

Even if you somehow find several of these in a single match, the maximum stack is 2. Sacrificing key weapons or heals to carry a third or fourth Air Strike would be a questionable bet in our opinion.

Air Strike Item Gameplay & Discussion

We capture a small bit of footage of the Air Strike. If you haven’t seen it in action yet, we recommend taking a quick look at the video. You’ll get a better idea of quickly builds can be destroyed with its destructive power.

While we couldn’t get testing with other build materials at this time, you can see the speed at which the 200 damage shells can shred through wood. Brick & Metal would fall similarly, but might require a helping hand from your gun or other explosives if the Air Strike’s random placement of missiles doesn’t go your way.

The reason we wouldn’t rate this in the “overpowered” category is due to its slow-ish call in time and delay before the bombs start dropping. Yes, it can do serious damage (as any worthy item should), but decent players will simply get out from beneath the Strike when they see you throw one. Using this perfectly will require a deft hand and good timing and that’s fine by us.

Our only gripe with the new item so far is its ‘random’ placement on the missile. Randomness makes us recoil away from its usage as this can mean accidental kills and potential useless Air Strikes where every missile happens to land at the very outer edge of the radius.

Only time will tell us of the Air Strike overall impact on gameplay and its role in the upcoming Fortnite World Cup finals.

Tell us your thoughts on this new Fortnite item in the comments below. Is Epic heading in the right direction with such location displacement additions or is it a little much in your mind?
