Fortnite Season 3 is less than a week old and Epic have already released a hotfix that included a new item. That’s a fantastic sign for the content schedule within the new season.
The new item that was enabled with the June 23 hotfix was the Firefly Jar, something that the original Season 3 leaks included in the game files. Epic could have held off with this new item as a way to keep it out of competitive modes, to start. On June 22, the Competitive Fortnite team released a blog post that included an “evaluation period” for new items. It’s understandable why they may want to wait on adding this one to Arena.

Now, onto the interesting mechanics of Fortnite’s newest item. You won’t find this one in the ground. In fact, it would appear as though we have our own stash of jars in our inventories, all of the time. In order to get your hands on the new item, you’ll need to catch some fireflies.
You’ll notice some shiny, new bugs around the coast of the Fortnite map. We’re not sure if they spawn everywhere, just yet, but we’ll update you on their locations if they end up being in the same spot each match.
All you have to do is walk up to a group of fireflies and press your ‘interact’ button. You’ll capture a jar of them and will be able to throw them at enemies. As expected, the new grenade works like a Molotov, setting players and structures on fire.
This is still a brand-new item and we haven’t been able to complete an in-depth test. According to the leaked information, the maximum stack size is 3 and it deals 40 damage to players with a direct hit. The fire damage appears to be slower if the player gets hit with the environmental fire damage.
We’ll update this post with some small clarifications and corrections as we’re able to test the item. Now, though, you know how to use the Firefly Jar in Fortnite Season 3.
